Needham 2 3/4 x 16″ Narrow Gauge Wheel Assemblies come assembled, ready to bolt on. They also come with 3 x shims to help set the correct distance of 1/8″ between the disc and gauge wheel tire.
The 2 3/4″ x 16″ Narrow Gauge Wheel Assemblies are almost half the width of a standard gauge wheel and are excellent for no-till, especially into corn stalks. This is because they avoid about half of the residue, compared to a wide gauge wheel assembly and this results in better depth control. The 2 3/4 x 16″ Narrow Gauge Wheels come assembled with two heavy duty steel wheel halves (not one steel and one plastic like lots of our completion) and the long-life Peer SeedXTreme bearing.
The Needham 2 3/4 x 16″ Narrow Gauge Wheel Assemblies also features a urethane narrow gauge wheel tire which is very abrasion resistant, in fact ASTM D-1938 lab testing has shown they last around 7 times longer than the factory rubber tires, and field testing has confirmed similar increases in life/performance. For example, we have growers who didn’t make it through the first season with their rubber gauge wheel tires, so they purchased our urethane gauge wheel tires and have ran them for 6-7 years (in similar, if not the same conditions and acres) without failure.
NOTE: Setting the clearance of 1/8″ between the disc and gauge wheel is important, because the gap between disc and gauge wheel will close slightly when opener is lowered and the gauge wheel presses against the soil surface.
